Muscles That Contract and Stretch

Remember that muscles are both elastic and contractile. Figure A represents a muscle contracting; Figure B represents the same muscle stretched or elongated.

MUSCLE NAMES

The names of specific muscles originate from a variety of sources, including:

• muscle location

• muscle shape

• muscle function

• muscle direction or position

• the number of heads (i.e., attachments) to bones

Antagonistic Muscles

Just as opposites exist in nature they also exist in the musculature of the body. Movement causes musculature relationships to become unbalanced and several muscles are actually designed to work in opposition to one another. These muscles, called antagonistic muscles, simultaneously swell and release. If the hamstring muscles bend the knee backwards and upwards, the quadriceps straightens it.
